Orienteering
Orienteering is the sport of navigation, at speed, across open or wild country, using map and compass.
The orienteering course around the school has been completed and 'trials' are going ahead to test out the routes, the locations, and the positioning of the semi-permanent checkpoints. At present we have 15 checkpoints. There is no one point on the school site at Merrylands where any more than four checkpoints can be seen at any one time.

An example of one of the orienteering checkpoints
Year 6 spent part of Friday 14 March, in brilliant sunshine, testing out the course. From a timed start each person had to go to a Master Map:

Code numbers were copied down by each competitor from the laminated Master Map to their own map, and they set off as quickly as possible. Once at the first checkpoint (on this 'trials day' they could start anywhere) they had to work out a bearing to another checkpoint (regardless of the order) and walk/run the course until all the checkpoints' numbers had been recorded on their maps, and all the bearings likewise recorded.
